Headlight Condensation: Why It Comes Back After Drying
Headlight condensation is a seal problem, not a weather problem. Once the seal between the lens and the housing has opened, every cold morning draws damp air in and the mist comes back, however carefully you dried it. Here is why, what fixes it, and what it costs by post from the UK or Ireland.
Why water gets into a headlight, new ones included
A headlight is a sealed box: the lens is bonded to the housing, and as long as that seal holds, nothing condenses on the lens.
Once the seal opens, even by a hair, the unit breathes: warm air leaves as the headlight heats up, damp air is drawn in as it cools, and the moisture settles on the inside of the lens. As our technician puts it, plenty of recent models that don't look the type end up with water inside.
A stone chip, a cracked housing or a lens glued back on after a knock does the same, only faster.
Drying it doesn't fix the seal
A hairdryer, a night in a warm garage or a bag of silica gel remove the water that is there now. None of them touches the way it got in, so the next cold morning starts the cycle again.
Mist that is back within days, or water pooling at the bottom of the lens, means the seal has gone and the headlight needs opening.
How to remove condensation from a headlight for good: lens off, reseal
There is no way to reseal a headlight from the outside. The lens comes off along its seal, the inside is cleaned, a new seal goes on and the lens is fitted back.
The seal needs twelve hours to cure, which is why nothing is turned round on the same day. If the lens is cracked, crazed or scratched, a new one goes on in the same job: headlight lens repair.
When the condensation has taken the chrome with it
A headlight that has held water for months shows it on the reflector and the inner trims: the chrome lifts and peels. Those parts are re-chromed before the unit is closed.
A flooded headlight: what to send us
Water rather than mist is a different case: on an LED unit the boards may have been sitting in it, and the quote changes if the running light strip or a driver has to be replaced as well.

Will headlight condensation fail the MOT or NCT?
The tester's manual is the authority, and we won't quote it until we have checked the wording. What we can say from the workshop: a unit that has held water for long often arrives with peeled chrome, and a reflector in that state is something a tester looks at. If your test is next month, say so when you ask for the quote: those headlights go to the front of the queue.
What headlamp condensation repair costs by post
Resealing alone is quoted from the photo, the model and the year. As a reference, a new lens with resealing is €230–240 including VAT, and repairs start from €195.

Frequently asked questions
Does a bag of silica gel in the headlight work?
It dries the air that is in there now, not the seal: the mist comes back once the gel is saturated.
Will the new seal hold?
The repair carries a six-month warranty, the same as any replacement part, provided the headlight isn't tampered with afterwards.
